Muhammed Dabirul Islam(Bangla: মুহম্মদ দবিরুল ইসলাম) (13 March 1922-13 January 1961) was a language activist, Protester of the Bangla Language Movement’52 and a legend student leader of East Pakistan Student League (now, Bangladesh Chhatra League). He encouraged to the other activists. He was the founder & Secretary of Thakurgaon Zila Awami League.
Muhammed Dabirul Islam was born in Bamunia, a village in Baliadangi Upazila in the Dinajpur District(Now part of Thakurgaon),the province of Bangla in British India.
Dabirul passed the matriculation with first class from Thakurgaon High School in 1938.And he was attending IA examination from Rajshahi Government College under Calcutta University, Again he awarded with first class in 4th Place inter all affiliated college of Calcutta University. Then he passed BA examination.
In 1947, He admitted to the department of law in Dhaka University. He was restricted from Dhaka University because of the political movements. He was participating L.L.B final examination during imprisonment and passed with good marks.
Newly reformed East Pakistan student league in 4th January 1948, Dabirul Islam became the President in first convener committee by first convener Naimuddin Ahmed. It was 14 members committee including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman(Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman).They started a obstinate and active protest from Pakistan governments and Bangla language moments, Its spread out to East Pakistan (Now Bangladesh).
In same time, the home town of Dabirul Islam, Dinajpur became flame of the Bangla Language Movement by Dabirul Islam,Nurol huda,Kader Box, M R Akhter Mukul and others activists.
He was arrested by Pakistan government’s police. When he gave the speech in a student arranged public meeting at Dinajpur Surendranath College (Now,Dinajpur Government Woman’s College). He was suffered tormenting torture and hit the chest with bayonet by Pakistan Government’s police in Dinajpur central prison.
Dabirul Islam was elected President of East Pakistan Muslim Legue in 4th January 1949 by voting of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and others students leaders in the first annual council meeting. He was president till 1953.
Within a few days after Annual meeting, again he was arrested by Pakistan Government.
After releasing from prison, He was nominated a candidate of Awami league for Thakurgaon-Seat in the 1954’ Election. He won and defeated Nurol Hoque a central leader of Muslim League. And he became a member (MLA) of Provincial government of East Pakistan.
30th August 1954,the United Front government destroyed by Pakistan government.
In the meantime, Dabirul Islam elected Parliament Secretary (Industries,Labour & Commerce) and worked as a state minister in 1956 by Abu Hossain Sarkar, Chief Minister of East Pakistan.
That time, He strongly demanded and explain the importance to his government for establishing Sugar Manufacturing Factory in Thakurgaon (The sugarcane Plantation-Thakurgaon Sugar Mill).
A legend and rare talent Muhammed Dabirul Islam had been suffered from different disease including cardiac problem because of brutal torture in prison from 1949 to 1954.As a result, he died a very young age in 13th January 1961.
